THE CHALLENGE
Altera’s EHR platform served thousands of providers, but its core workflows—especially in ambulatory and mobile—were fragmented, outdated, and frustrating for clinicians.
The company needed a fresh design vision to:
✔️ Reimagine critical workflows for speed and usability
✔️ Improve satisfaction and clinical efficiency
✔️ Lay the foundation for scalable, AI-integrated experiences
MY ROLE
As the lead product designer on high-impact initiatives, I combined strategic direction with hands-on UX and UI execution.
Key contributions:
Designed end-to-end product experiences for web, mobile, and AI-assisted tools
Conducted clinician co-creation sessions to ground features in real-world use
Established design system patterns and visual direction for scalable UI
Partnered daily with product, engineering, and clinical SMEs to align vision with delivery
THE APPROACH
Reimagining the Ambulatory Experience
I began by observing and mapping clinician workflows, interviewing physicians and nurses to uncover friction points.
Key priorities emerged:
Clarity of information at a glance
Quick access to top tasks
Reduced cognitive load in high-pressure environments
I translate insights into early prototypes, validating design direction and securing alignment across clinical, business, and technical teams.
WIREFRAMES & VISUAL DESIGN
AI-Informed Patient Profiles
To reduce task-switching and improve decision-making, I designed a streamlined patient profile with:
Context-aware surfacing of relevant health information
Smart prioritization of notes, medications, and care plans
A scalable layout ready for AI-powered insights and predictive recommendations
Mobile EHR Redesign
Led the redesign of the clinician mobile app, consolidating four legacy products into one unified experience.
Highlights:
Mobile-native workflows designed from scratch
SUS score improvement of 21 points, reaching 87.5
Scalable Design Systems
To support over 40 development teams, I created a component-based design system that balanced brand, accessibility, and dev feasibility.
Established modular UI patterns and governance
Produced clear documentation to speed adoption
Partnered with engineering for consistent implementation
Quick Wins, Real Impact
Implemented small but high-visibility UI refinements that boosted clarity, reduced visual noise, and secured early stakeholder buy-in — paving the way for larger redesign initiatives.

After
THE IMPACT
✔️ Improved clinician efficiency by reducing steps and surfacing key data
✔️ Increased satisfaction across web and mobile platforms
✔️ Accelerated delivery by aligning design system standards
✔️ Positioned Altera as a differentiated brand post-acquisition
✔️ Embedded design earlier in roadmapping and Agile delivery
This work reflects my approach to product design:
Systems-aware, human-centered, and outcome-driven — zooming in to refine the smallest interactions while zooming out to connect the experience across a complex care ecosystem. ✨
